The One Question Not to Ask Your Vet During Pet Euthanasia

by

Introduction

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is a deeply emotional and challenging experience that is shared between the veterinarian and the grieving guardian. It’s a time when compassion, sensitivity, and understanding are of paramount importance. This sensitivity is a two-way street. Our role as the veterinarian in this procedure is difficult for us no matter how many times we have performed it. And there is one particular question that can unintentionally make this even more emotional for us.

The question you should avoid asking your veterinarian when they are euthanizing your pet is, “How do you do this?” Ask any vet their least favorite question, and this will be it. Although this inquiry may arise from genuine curiosity and concern, it’s crucial to understand why this question can make the situation more difficult for your veterinarian.

When you ask, “How do you do this?” it can come across as assuming your veterinarian is cold to this procedure. That we must have to put a wall up to protect ourselves in order to get through our days. It is actually the opposite… We feel it all. Every single time. As veterinarians, most of us are empaths. We chose this career because we feel animals and their spirits on a deeper level than most. And we also feel your emotions very strongly. It is necessary for us to feel deeply in order to show up for both you and your beloved pet in a way that is empathetic and caring. Each time we bear witness to this profound transition and the love that is shared, our capacity for feeling and empathy grows; it doesn’t lessen. Therefore, even though it may be unintentional, this question can be emotionally challenging for us.

This question also inadvertently shifts the focus away from the emotional and spiritual aspects of saying goodbye to your beloved pet. It centers the conversation on the vet and the technical details of the euthanasia procedure rather than the love, connection, and cherished memories you share with your furry friend. This moment is about you, your family, and your dog.

Veterinarians are deeply committed to providing a peaceful and painless transition for your pet when the time comes. This weighty responsibility is one that we do not take lightly. We do not look at it as a burden of our profession. We instead accept this role as part of our dedication to easing animal suffering and helping animals when they need us most. And we want to be there for you as well. Although sad, it is an honor to witness the love in the room and the beautiful relationship that you have with your dog.

So, instead of asking, “How do you do this?” instead, consider sharing your feelings, focusing on your pet’s well-being, and discussing any special requests that you may have. Your veterinarian is there to help you navigate this difficult journey with empathy and support, and together, you can ensure that your beloved pet’s transition is as gentle and loving as possible.

As you give this final gift to your beloved companion, what truly matters is that your goodbye is exactly how you want it to be. Allow yourself to be fully present as you say good-bye to your beloved friend. And for us, the veterinarians, we will carry the rest for you. We will be the ones to give the final injection, but it is not the act of euthanasia we will remember. It is the palpable feeling of devotion in that room and the sacred bond that you shared that we will take with us, using it to fully show up for the next guardian and pet in need.
